Burnout is not just a buzzword—it’s a breaking point. Especially in mission-driven work where the stakes are high, teams stretched thin, and generations struggling to connect. Gen Z wants purpose and flexibility. Millennials want growth and respect. Gen X wants autonomy. Boomers want legacy. How do you keep everyone energized and aligned? One possible solution: Third Spaces
What Are Third Spaces?
Third spaces are the “in-between” places where connection to yourself and your community allows you to thrive and create—separate from home or the formal office. Think of them as culture containers that allow people to breathe, belong, and build. Whether physical or virtual, these spaces spark trust and creativity across intersectional identities like age, national origin, spiritual denominations, and background.
Why They Matter Now More Than Ever
Intergenerational tension is a silent killer of collaboration. Without a place to gather, learn, and share without hierarchy, misunderstandings fester. Third spaces create neutral ground for real dialogue and cross-generational learning. When I was a recruiter, I worked with many hiring managers who were looking for a younger version of themselves. As an adjunct professor now, I’ve noticed many of the students I teach have very different ideas about work and what it means to manage the expectations of their team leader or supervisor. You’ve heard about quiet vacationing and quiet vacationing. If you haven’t, start Googling. The next generation might be quietly plotting their exit or worse totally disengaged. What I’ve learned is that taking time to bring the outside in by either planning for third space breaks or activations, can neutralize burnout into active buy-in.
What Happens When You Don’t Have One
I’ve noticed that third spaces can give a refresh to intergenerational teams. When there’s no opportunity to build bridges across generations, here’s what can happen:
- Young staff members check out.
- Senior staff feel dismissed.
- Meetings become battlegrounds, not bridges. The us vs. them mentality between departments or between HQ vs. field locations is when the silos become unsurmountable.
- Innovation stalls. Curiosity goes out the door because high performance can suck the life out of being open to trying new things.
- Retention tanks.
How I Help
I help organizations and their leaders build sustainable third space strategies that honor every generation and unlock their unique strengths. From reviving dormant staff lounges to creating dynamic team building events. I work with your team to co-create rituals, spaces, and systems that keep people energized and invested. I teach teams how to get affirmative engagement and feedback that sparks creativity, connection, and belonging.
